Day after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured strictest possible punishment in the Baruipur rape-murder case, state Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul met the victim’s relatives on Tuesday and assured them that the accused would face exemplary punishment, reiterating the state government’s commitment to ensuring justice.

Paul said the victim’s family has been assured that justice would be delivered without delay. She claimed that the family has expressed satisfaction with the state government’s response.

“The accused were arrested within 24 hours. No one will be spared and exemplary punishment will be ensured,” Paul said after meeting the family.

The visit by the BJP delegation led by Agnimitra Paul and Locket Chatterjee came ahead of Adhikari’s scheduled visit to Baruipur to meet the bereaved family later in the day.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW), which has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, has sought a detailed report from the state’s Director General of Police on the progress of the investigation and the action taken so far, within seven days.

The NCW has also asked the police to furnish details regarding the alleged lynching that took place in the aftermath of the incident, during which a mob reportedly beat a suspect to death.

Tension gripped Dhapdhapi in Baruipur on Sunday morning after the body of the minor girl was recovered from a pond. Alleging that the victim had been raped and murdered, local residents staged road and rail blockades, demanding immediate arrest of those responsible.

Following the incident, the Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the victim’s father over phone and assured him of a swift investigation and speedy justice. The police subsequently constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) later the same day to probe the case. Within hours, police arrested three persons, including the prime accused, identified as Anand Sardar.

On Monday, the chief minister reiterated that the accused would face the maximum punishment permissible under the law and also expressed support for capital punishment in cases involving such heinous crimes.
